"In the footsteps of the Huguenots" is a European Cultural Hiking Itinerary that follows the historical route of the Dauphiné Huguenots' exile to Switzerland and Germany after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685).
Description
This cultural and heritage trail focuses on the discovery of nature and heritage. It starts at the Musée du Protestantisme dauphinois in Le Poët-Laval, crosses several valleys and leaves the Drôme via the Col de Menée to arrive in Isère via the Trièves plateau and the Matheysine.
Between Grenoble and Chambéry, it runs halfway up the Chartreuse massif, crossing the Petites Roches plateau. Passage along Lac du Bourget takes you eastwards through the town of Aix-les-Bains to reach Chautagne and the Rhône at Seyssel. After bypassing the Vuache, the border is crossed at Chancy, west of Geneva. The 1,800 km route, 374 km of which is in France, currently stops at Bad Karlshafen in Germany.
Bringing this international, national and local history to light can shed a different light on the near past and present. This parallelism can provide a different perspective on current events and our relationship with others, and contribute to a positive awareness of our European and global citizenship.
The European Cultural Itinerary "In the Footsteps of the Huguenots" was approved by the Council of Europe in 2013 and awarded the GR® label by the French Hiking Federation in 2015 under the name "GR Sur les pas des Huguenots" (GR®965). It has since been marked in red and white.
